A Sports Production Whitepaper for the Rest of Us

Posted by jakeandtycho - November 28th, 2010

Fiber Optics in Sports ProductionBecause our online white paper describing fiber in ENG production has generated a lot of interest, we’ve written a similar non-technical paper on sports production. This is a document for the rest of us—meaning it’s very light on engineering jargon. Its plain language will help you understand the basic differences between copper and fiber, and why fiber is now increasingly used in all sports production throughout the world.

Telecast Fiber has vast experience in helping with sports productions around the globe—both in the mobile broadcast vehicles and in the sports venues themselves. We have upgraded about 30 U.S. college sports stadiums, as well more than 27 other venues including the Daytona Speedway, Fenway Park in Boston, and Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden in New York City.

In a nutshell, high-definition television and the increasing need for bandwidth has been driving fiber in sports production for several years. Now, with increases in 3D and 1080p 2D high-definition production, the bandwidth requirements have doubled. Add the popularity of slow motion and other specialty sports devices and the bandwidth needs double again.

On top of broadcast requirements, the sports venues themselves need bandwidth for non-broadcast video applications. Many now have multi-venue control rooms, scoreboard and stadium signage systems, and remote monitors—not to mention very advanced multi-channel sound systems. A single pencil-sized fiber optic cable can handle all of these applications simultaneously, with a huge amount of bandwidth to spare.

A rule of thumb in the United States is 0,000 worth of fiber saves million worth of copper in a venue. And with the further cost savings of faster set-up and tear down requirements before and after each event for broadcast remote trucks, one can easily see the future is fiber.  Download the paper and learn about the huge benefits of fiber optic technology. The creative possibilities are endless.

I encourage you to read it and send me comments about sports production in general and your personal experience using Telecast Fiber Systems products to make it happen. If you’re not using Telecast Fiber… why not?
